The rescue followed an animal cruelty report filed with the organization.

The jug, likely part of an automatic pet feeder, had become lodged around the dogās neck as it attempted to reach food. Although the top of the jug was open, allowing some air, the dog was unable to access food or water for an extended period.
āThis was a potentially life-threatening situation,ā said Dr. Roberta West, Chief Veterinarian and Vice President of Veterinary Medicine at the Houston SPCA. āThe jug was tightly secured around his neck, and the dog had no way to eat or hydrate. If the report had come in later, the outcome could have been much different.ā
Veterinary staff removed the jug without sedation, and the dog is now in stable condition. Officials at the scene discovered the dog had been abandoned along with several other dogs and a rabbit, as well as a deceased rabbit. All animals were rescued from the property with a warrant served by Harris County Constable Precinct 1.
A hearing for this animal cruelty case is scheduled for next week.
