A man has been charged with murder following a shooting at a motel on Houston’s eastside over the weekend.
The shooting happened at 11999 East Freeway around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 11.

Douglas Tyrone Hicks, 63, is charged with murder. The identity of the deceased male, 29, has not been released at this time.
Houston Police Department officers responded to a report of a shooting at the motel and found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Responding Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.
While officers were at the location, they were approached by a male who stated he was the shooter. He was identified as Hicks, and claimed he shot the man in self-defense.
Witnesses reported that Hicks and the victim had a verbal argument earlier in the evening. The victim was told to leave by security, but he returned later and ran into Hicks in the parking lot. They began arguing again, and Hicks pulled out a gun and shot the victim.
Authorities allege that the victim may have made threats towards Hicks and had a gun in his waistband when he was shot.
Investigators consulted the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, which accepted charges of murder against Hicks. He was later booked into the Harris County Jail.
