HOUSTON – Authorities are looking for a hit-and-run driver who killed a pedestrian overnight Friday in SW Houston, and while they remained at the scene briefly, police said they did not stick around by the time cops arrived.

A little after midnight, investigators said they were called to Hillcroft Avenue & Dashwood Drive, where a man, known to be experiencing homelessness, had been hit by a car.

According to Sgt. D. Griffiths with HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division, despite the spotty rain in the area, the weather did not seem to be a factor in the crash.

“Looking at the video, I can’t tell if it did or didn’t. This is still a highly traveled area, and at the time, there were still plenty of people out here,” she explained. “We were able to speak with multiple witnesses because there are plenty of open food trucks and people patronizing those businesses out here...so I don’t think the weather may have played a part in it. I just know the driver didn’t stop and wait for the police to arrive.”

Several witnesses spoke to the driver, Sgt. Griffiths added, and initially, they stayed at the scene briefly before taking off.

Investigators are still looking for the driver, but in the meantime, they said they’d be reviewing video evidence from nearby businesses and collecting witness statements.
