They said a chase began on San Felipe and Bellmeade and ended behind River Oaks Elementary School, east on San Felipe.
Homeowner Esfandiar Baharloo said the burglary was in progress at his home, when he wasn’t there.
“I saw a suspicious person on camera and immediately called River Oaks Patrol,” said Baharloo.
Neighbors tell KPRC 2 they heard four to eight gunshots.
“I heard bam bam bam,” said Madeleine Connor, who lives just a few houses down from where the shooting took place. “It’s really kind of scary to know that one of our great River Oaks Patrol guys was shot."
River Oaks Patrol is a 24/7 team of officers and dispatchers serving exclusively the River Oaks community and is funded by the residents.
“River Oaks Patrol is very good,” said Connor. “My mother used to live in this house for 20 years by herself, and so it was a really good, comforting thing to have River Oaks Patrol always on top of it.”
The shooting happened just before 3 p.m. at 3200 San Felipe, with HPD Command Center confirming that a burglary suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Constable Alan Rosen says the guard was shot in the arm while confronting the suspect, then returned fire. The injured guard was taken to the hospital and is in fair condition.
