HOUSTON – A tragic incident unfolded Sunday night at the Gables at Richmond Apartments in Houston. Houston Police said 31-year-old Abdul Rahman Waziri was shot and killed following an argument over parking.
KPRC2 Reporter Corley Peel spoke with Waziri’s brother, Abdullah Khan, who flew in from Florida after learning about the tragedy.
“We came from Afghanistan because we were helping the U.S. government. My brother was working with special forces and was the lead person in the mission when they were conducting operations. We came here to seek safety, but it is also not safe for us,” Khan said.
Waziri lived at the apartment complex with his wife and two young daughters. At the crime scene, Waziri’s white car was parked in front of the mailboxes with its hazard lights still flashing. A black car was parked behind it. According to HPD, the shooter fired at Waziri following a dispute over parking. Police said Waziri was shot more than once and died from his injuries.
“That’s not something to shoot somebody for,” Khan remarked.
Video from the scene captured the accused shooter being handcuffed. HPD said the man approached officers and informed them about the shooting. HPD took the man’s gun and questioned him, but after consulting with the District Attorney’s office, he was released.
Nisar Momand, an Afghan community leader, called for a thorough investigation.
“They need to do a fair investigation. We need justice and peace,” he stated.
Khan said his brother did not know the shooter. He shared his deep sorrow over the loss. “I miss him so much. He was my support. He has a family, two daughters,” he said. He added, “I want to find out what was exactly wrong with that person, and he should get punished for that.”
Despite the shooter not being arrested or charged, HPD confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. Authorities plan to review surveillance video to gather more information about the incident. Khan noted that he had a chance to view some surveillance footage from the apartment complex, but he said it did not capture the shooting.
Waziri’s family is hoping for more answers about what happened. Those with any information are asked to contact the Houston Police Department Homicide Division at (713) 308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-TIPS.
