Houston Mayor John Whitmire made the announcement on Facebook, posted alongside a video of him receiving the confirmation that the Navy had accepted his invitation
“We formally accept that invitation. We look forward to bringing the Navy down to Houston, and we’re going to do Fleet Week Houston in November,” said Admiral Daryl Caudle, Commander of the US Fleet Forces Command.
Fleet Week is an annual tradition of the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard where active duty ships dock in major cities for a week. The public has been able to tour these ships, and the week is accompanied by other special events, such as air shows and military demonstrations. The public will also get to meet servicemembers.
Whitmire says this is not only the first time Fleet Week has been in Houston, but in Texas as well.
“It’s going to be at least 1,000 sailors and marines, so you’ll see them flood the zone around your great city in their dress uniforms, We will coordinate with your team sir, we will arrange hundreds of events,” Caudle told Whitmire.
Right now, the exact date is unknown, but Whitmire says it will take place sometime in November.
