Nearly a year after a Houston man was shot inside his home, DNA evidence has identified a suspect now charged with murder.

LaPatrick Deshawn Mitchell, 25, is now charged with murder in connection to the fatal shooting of 68-year-old John Williams, according to Houston police.

Mitchell, already serving time on an unrelated charge, was charged after forensic testing linked his DNA to evidence found at the scene.

The shooting happened around 11:20 p.m. on February 21, 2023, at a home on Westcott Street. Police say Williams was found shot inside his residence and was rushed to a hospital, where he later died on May 16, 2023, from his injuries.

Detectives developed a person of interest early in the investigation, but it was forensic evidence that ultimately connected Mitchell to the crime.
