Houston ISD says 2022-2023 TEA rating evidence state takeover was needed

HOUSTON – After months of delays and legal disputes, the Texas Education Agency has released the 2022-2023 accountability ratings for the state’s public schools and districts.

Houston ISD, the largest district in the state that is currently under state control, received a C-grade for that year.

The data predates the state takeover of HISD, and a district spokesperson says the C-grade is more evidence the intervention was needed.

The district hopes this year’s ratings are not delayed and Superintendent Mike Miles says this data is needed for both parents and the district to see how they are doing.

“I think parents deserve to know whether a school is A-rated, like a letter grade, A, B, C, D, or F-rated. Regardless of whether it is good or bad, I think parents need to know that, and we need to know that, principals need to know so that if it is not good, we need to do something,” Miles said.

The release of the 2024 ratings remains on hold. The district expects to get the next update from the TEA about the ratings in August.
