Man charged in shooting that injured Harris County Pct. 1 deputy constable Sheila Jones near courthouse

The man suspected of shooting Harris County Pct. 1 deputy constable Sheila Jones on Monday has been charged with the incident one day later.

Parnell Treymayne Bland, 34, has been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Harris County deputies and Houston Police Department officers were patrolling the area near the courthouse when they were alerted to a man in the area with a gun. A spokesperson for the DA’s office confirmed Tuesday that Bland had two firearms.

Authorities located the suspect, identified as Bland, and they chased him. He pointed at least one gun at the officers, and an exchange of gunfire led to both Jones and Bland being struck.

Both were hospitalized with injuries and are expected to recover.

Shortly after the shooting yesterday, Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare indicated that the county would pursue an aggravated assault against a peace officer charge against Bland for his role in the attack.

On Tuesday afternoon, prosecutors filed paperwork asking for Bland to be held without bond on the aggravated assault of a public servant charge, according to court records. Citing his previous felony conviction and the use of a firearm in this new felony charge, they’ve asked a judge for him to be held without bond, pending his trial.

KPRC 2 has learned Bland has an extensive criminal history in both Harris and Liberty counties.

Harris County court record show Bland has at least six prior felony convictions, three of them drug-related crimes.
