Deputies arrived to find a silver SUV that had crashed into a tree in front of a home in northwest Harris County. Investigators said the vehicle was riddled with bullet holes, and a woman was found shot to death inside.

The victim was identified as Debra Carrington.

Detectives believe she was shot somewhere in the neighborhood before crashing her vehicle into the tree.

Following further investigation, authorities determined that the incident was not a random act of road rage.

Suspect was no stranger

Gregory Brown, 54, was later identified as the suspect in Carrington’s death. Investigators said Brown was her estranged ex-boyfriend and was identified through surveillance footage captured near the scene, as well as cellphone interactions with Carrington shortly before her death.

A warrant was issued for Brown’s arrest, and members of the Sheriff’s Office Violent Criminal Apprehension Team attempted to execute the warrant at his residence, located at 5607 Colfax Street.

Brown refused to exit the home and barricaded himself inside.

Murder-suicide

The Houston Police Department SWAT team was called to the scene and eventually made entry, discovering that Brown had shot himself sometime after the initial warrant attempt.

The Houston Police Department Homicide Division will conduct an investigation into the incident, which is standard procedure for any in-custody death.

Investigators believe Brown acted alone in Carrington’s murder, and no other suspects are being sought by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Division.
