Two students were hospitalized at Deer Park High School after they were hit by a fellow student driving an SUV recklessly in the school’s parking lot.

The incident happened at around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning in the southwest section of the Abshier Stadium parking lot. Two students were walking across the parking lot towards the school when the SUV circled across the parking lot and hit them.

School administrators responded immediately, and first responders rushed to the scene.

The two victims—a boy and girl—were transported to a nearby hospital.

In the hours after the incident, DPHS Principal Kirk Taylor confirmed that they were conscious and responsive, but both sustained injuries. A Deer Park PD source told KPRC 2 that their injuries are not life threatening.

The teen driving the SUV was later identified as 17-year-old Christian Perez. He was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of reckless aggravated assault.

Due to testing happening at the school Tuesday, some students were exiting the campus at the time of the collision and witnessed the events unfold.

Taylor also said that counseling will be available for students who were shaken by the violent scene.

“Finally, I hope you’ll join our South Campus team in keeping the students in our thoughts and prayers,” Taylor said.
