Two historic homes in Galveston’s Silk Stocking District went up in flames Saturday morning, sending two people to the hospital with serious burns and smoke inhalation.

Authorities say the fire started just before 9:30 a.m. on the 1400 block of 24th Street.

Four people were pulled out of the burning homes and two were seriously injured. Paramedics rushed the two seriously injured victims to the trauma center at UTMB Health’s John Sealy Hospital. There’s no word yet on their conditions.

Galveston Fire Chief Mike Varela says the flames quickly jumped from one house to the next.

Fire crews were forced to switch to a defensive strategy to stop the flames from spreading to even more homes nearby.
