Harris County suing President Trump, administration for ‘un-American’ freeze on refugee funds

Harris County is taking legal action against President Donald Trump and his administration in response to a freeze on federal funding.

The lawsuit, announced by Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee, seeks millions in reimbursement for the county’s refugee program.

“We’re doing what you do when government breaks the rules. We’re filing a lawsuit,” Menefee stated during a press conference on Wednesday.

The lawsuit names the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as well as President Donald Trump and his administration. Harris County is suing over frozen federal funds that are crucial for its refugee resettlement program.

“Our refugee resettlement and screening health program is one of the longest-running programs of its kind in the entire country,” Menefee added.

In Harris County, more than 11,000 people benefit from this program, which includes Afghan refugees who assisted the U.S. during the war in the Middle East. Without the necessary funding, these individuals face the risk of eviction.

One refugee expressed the urgency of their situation: “Now, since we are here and no longer serving the U.S. military in Afghanistan, they have to support us with finding jobs and employment. The rest we can find on our way. But, at least we shouldn’t be left behind.”

The funds are essential for various needs, including rent and medical services. The program has been operational since World War II, and according to Menefee, the county has already spent more than $1.5 million that would typically be reimbursed. By the end of the year, that figure is expected to exceed $6 million.

“Let’s be clear. This freeze violates the United States Constitution and several federal laws,” Menefee asserted.

Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones echoed these sentiments, stating, “This is not new. And again, it is un-American to pull the rug on a commitment that is long founded.”

The county filed the lawsuit against the president and his administration in a federal court in Washington, D.C. In the meantime, officials are committed to continuing assistance for those affected as much as possible.
