This news wasn’t shocking for those who have paid attention to the college basketball landscape over the past week. Maryland’s previous head coach, Kevin Willard, had been the main subject of rumors surrounding the vacancy at Villanova—which is widely accepted as one of the premiere jobs in college hoops.

He proved the validity of those speculations when he accepted the Villanova job shortly after Maryland’s loss to Florida in the Sweet 16, and Williams’ name came up early and often as a candidate to replace Willard in College Park.

Tuesday afternoon, On3 reported that “all signs” pointed to Williams leaving College Station for the Terps. Less than an hour later, the move was made official.

Williams spent six seasons with the Aggies. After missing the tournament in each of his first three campaigns, he led the Aggies to three straight trips to the Big Dance. In their most recent trip, they took down Yale in the opening round before blowing a double-digit lead in a loss to Michigan in the Round of 32.

Now, the Aggies search for their next leader. Potential options A&M might consider making a run at include Iowa State’s T.J. Otzelberger, Texas Tech’s Grant McCasland and High Point’s Alan Huss—all of whom are coming off of March Madness runs with their current programs.
