Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the two groups, who were all possibly teenagers, got into a fight, at which point gunfire erupted.
At the scene, Lt. Dennis Wolfford said a group of seven to eight men and women walked into the restaurant around 5:25 p.m. and appeared to be ordering food when another group of two to three other men showed up and a fight broke out. Wolfford said the people all appeared to be between the ages of 16 and 20-years-old.
Wolfford said gunshots were fired both inside and outside the restaurant. A 61-year-old man inside the restaurant was shot multiple times. Another 26-year-old man was shot as he attempted to exit the McDonald’s. He then ran to a nearby Waffle House.
The two groups of people got into two separate vehicles, a maroon-colored SUV and a white sedan and fled the scene.
The 61-year-old man was flown by helicopter to a hospital and is said to be in surgery. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez later said he was in critical condition. The 26-year-old man was taken by ambulance and is in serious condition, but is expected to survive.
“Its amazing that only two people were hit in this incident,” Wolffard said, describing the incident as quick and chaotic.
Authorities believe the older man was a bystander and was not involved in the fight. It is unclear whether the 26-year-old man was involved in the fight or not at this time.
Update: the innocent bystander (61) is hospitalized in critical condition. The other wounded male (26) is in serious condition, but expected to recover.
