It’s been a year since 18-year-old Jarvon Coles was tragically shot and killed at a party in Humble. The shooting took place on Fieldwick Lane, and since then, there have been no solid leads on the identity of the shooter. Despite efforts from law enforcement and the heartbreak of his family, the search for justice continues.
A promising future cut short
Jarvon Coles family says he was more than just a young man with a promising future; he was a standout football player at North Shore High School with plans to play at Lamar University. Just before the fatal shooting, Jarvon had been at a birthday celebration for his grandfather, enjoying the day with his family. Little did they know, it would be the last time they would see him alive.
His mother, Britteny Coles, recalls the last moments she shared with her son.
“I have a video of him at the birthday party, and he was peeking around the corner, trying to hide his shirt. He said, ‘Mom, don’t video me, I have a stain on my shirt.' And I said ‘we don’t care about that!‘” We all laughed, and that was the last video of him, alive."
His grandfather, Braxton Coles, also reflects on the final moments before the tragedy. “He told me he was leaving to go to the party. About 15 to 20 minutes later, I got an alert on my phone to look at my ring camera and I saw him walked out of the door. That was the last time.”
At the party, over 100 people were in attendance when shots rang out from the back of the property. Partygoers scattered, dropping to the ground, but Jarvon never got back up. Braxton received an alarming call about Jarvon having a seizure. When he arrived at the scene, he realized it wasn’t a seizure—it was something far worse. “There were about 20 constables there and I thought ‘wow, this is a lot for a seizure,” he said “I later found out he had been shot.
Still searching for answers
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward, but one year later, the shooter and any potential witnesses have remained silent. Brittney said the darkness of the night and the chaos of the party made it difficult for partygoers to identify who fired the shots. “Somebody at the party knows something,” Braxton says, emphasizing the ongoing need for justice.
“If the person who did this was right in front of me right now,” Braxton added, “And, if it was up to me to decide whether that person lived or died, I would not choose for them to die. That won’t bring my grandson back.”
Turning pain into purpose
In the wake of Jarvon’s death, the Coles family has channeled their grief into action by founding the anti-gun violence nonprofit organization, Crash Out for a Cause. The initiative aims to empower youth through sports, providing opportunities to those who may not be able to afford them.
“We sponsor kids in youth football and basketball,” Braxton explained. “We’re also in the process of awarding three scholarships.”
Their mission is clear: to ensure that no other child experiences the tragic fate of Jarvon. Braxton continues to extend a message to the shooter: “I know it’s tough on you. I know it’s hard for you to sleep at night. You took something from us. Turn yourself in.”
