HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A woman has been arrested after authorities say her 3-year-old special needs nephew was found wandering barefoot along a busy northwest Harris County roadway.

The Harris County Pct. 1 Constable’s Office said the child, who is non-verbal and has autism, was found along the roadway median in the 5400 block of W. Mt. Houston Road around 5 a.m. Wednesday. Three concerned citizens found the boy and called 911.

Deputies responded and made sure the boy was ok and helped search for the his relatives.

Around 6 a.m., the child’s mother called 911, shortly after she returned to the apartment home in the 5700 block of W. Mt. Houston Road. She said the boy had been staying with his aunt who was supposed to be caring for him.

The aunt, Sade K. Stewart, 31, was arrested and charged with child endangerment. CPS was also contacted.

“We are grateful to the members of the community who spotted this young boy and prevented possible tragedy,” said Pct. 1 Constable Alan Rosen. “We must remember to take care our children, especially the most vulnerable members of our society.”
