Police said it happened at 13511 Hycohen Road, not far from Almeda Genoa Road.

Lt. Larry Crowson with HPD said the girl, who had been diagnosed with autism, was in the care of her aunt at the time. They were inside the apartment with possibly one other child.

“At some point, the aunt was distracted and the 8-year-old was able to get out of the apartment, the aunt discovered that and started searching the apartment complex,” Crowson said.

Other residents of the apartment helped in the search and were able to find the girl within five minutes inside a nearby retention pond.

CPR was performed and the girl was transported to a hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

Crowson said they are speaking to the aunt and other witnesses.

“This appears to be a very tragic accident, we just want to remind people to do everything they can to keep an eye on children in their care,” Crowson said
