Cayman Wilson, now 19, was charged in the death of Marissa Dikeman, who was shot and killed on Dec. 30, 2022, while taking down Christmas decorations at her home in east Harris County.

According to investigators, Wilson and another 17-year-old were helping Dikeman when Wilson began handling a firearm, which discharged and struck Dikeman. Paramedics responded to the scene but pronounced her dead.

Wilson was arrested and charged with manslaughter. He later pleaded guilty and, on Friday, received five years of deferred adjudication from Judge Ana Hernandez.

Deferred adjudication is a form of probation in Texas that allows defendants to avoid a conviction on their record if they successfully complete the court-ordered terms.

According to court documents, Wilson’s terms include paying $14,000 restitution, attending Education Program Effective Decision Making, and not being able to possess, receive, or purchase a firearm.

Wilson’s sentencing means he must comply with conditions set by the court. Failure to do so could result in harsher penalties, including possible jail time.
