As spring break approaches, businesses and law enforcement on Galveston Island prepare for an influx of visitors following a chaotic Friday.
On Friday, thousands of high school students gathered on the island for a “Senior Skip Day,” leading to multiple reports of fights and gunfire. Galveston police responded to several beaches where large crowds had formed.
One group of students described the moment chaos broke out.
“We were at Sunny Beach, and everybody started running,” one student said. “We all got in the car and left, and then they started shooting after.”
With spring break around the corner, business owners along the Seawall say they’re taking precautions to ensure a safer environment.
“We don’t really like something like that, but we’re prepared for anything,” said Eliran Amsallem, who works at Beach Break.
Visitors also say they are staying cautious.
“I’m with my little siblings, so putting them in danger would be scary,” said Melodie Huesca, visiting from Corsicana. “I’m carrying pepper spray—we’re always on our toes.”
Galveston police detained several people in connection with Friday’s incidents and say they will have an increased presence throughout spring break to maintain order.
