Sky 2 Chopper flew over the scene where smoke and flames were visible from the air.
HFD Deputy Chief Bryan Sky-Eagle says the call came in about the fire about 2 p.m. They arrived to find a fire on the first floor rapidly spreading to the second floor of the building.
Sky-Eagle says the wind conditions made it difficult to control the fire as well as the fact the building was of older construction and did not have any fire stops, meaning once it broke through to the second floor there was nothing really able to stop it from spreading.
The fire was eventually upgraded to a 2-alarm and then 3-alarm fire and additional firefighters arrived on scene. In total, Sky-Eagle says over 200 firefighters responded to fight the fire.
It took over a hour to get control over the fire. Sky-Eagle says they were able to save a lot of the front side of the building, but the backside facing the wind had heavy damage. 40 units inside the building were destroyed and it is estimated that over 100 people were displaced.
Thankfully, Sky-Eagle says there has been no reports of injuries to civilians or firefighters.
“It took everything we had to stop this fire today,” Sky-Eagle said.
The Red Cross will be responding to assist the people who have been displaced.
