FIEL representatives highlight issues impacting Houston’s immigrant families

Community members and FIEL representatives said they are working to raise awareness for issues affecting immigrant families in Houston.

In a press conference held Thursday morning, members of FIEL Houston (an acronym for “Familias Inmigrantes y Estudiantes en la Lucha,” or “Immigrant Families and Students in the Fight”) urged the immigrant members of the Houston community to carry work permits to avoid being picked up by federal immigration authorities.

Members also shared stories about individuals with work permits being mistakenly detained by immigration officials. Despite carrying the necessary documents, some people have still been detained.

The organization has conducted over 40 “Know Your Rights” workshops since Jan. 20.

“We have been talking to people, organizing, and meeting them where they’re at,” a FIEL representative said during the press conference.

These efforts aim to inform all people, not just undocumented individuals, about their rights in the U.S.

“I know that they have rights, and they have the right to exercise those rights,” the representative added.
