Houston family left high and dry: $16,000 paid for renovations that never materialized

HOUSTON – The Harris County Attorney’s Office has filed a lawsuit against a home renovation company near Rice Military, accusing it of fraudulent practices. This legal action comes after several residents reported losing significant amounts of money to the company named in the lawsuit.

One of the affected homeowners, Rhonda Spriggs, shared her story with KPRC 2. She paid $16,000 for a bathroom renovation that was never started.

“We paid them $16,000, and they did not do any work,” Spriggs said. “They came out once and said they would start in a week. We prepared for it, but on the scheduled day, no one showed up. I was told someone had been in a car accident and was in the hospital. They promised to reschedule but never called back.”

Spriggs is among over 100 Houston residents who paid upfront for discounted renovation work that was never completed. The company, operating under several “doing business as” (DBA) names, allegedly collected payments without delivering services.

Despite attempts to recover her money, Spriggs has been unsuccessful. “I can’t get the renovation done because I still have to pay off the $16,000 loan,” she said.

The last communication Spriggs received from the company was a text message on Sept. 5, 2023, promising to reach out for scheduling. She is now listed among 138 other creditors with unsecured claims in a bankruptcy document filed by the company in July 2024, which lists over $4 million in liabilities. The largest claim is for just over $203,000.

The Harris County Attorney’s Office is suing Hadad Design and Construction, along with its DBAs, including Kitchen and Bath Decor and More, and KBD, for violating the Deceptive Trade Practices Consumer Protection Act and the Texas Business and Commerce Code.

In a text message to KPRC Reporter Joy Addison from the number listed as the business phone number, a representative says the reports are “‘The allegations are completely without merit.’ Our council will vigorously defend against this lawsuit.’ and ‘we look forward to presenting the facts and defense of these allegations.’ As always we stand committed to our clients and the community in which we have provided beautiful home designs, and renovations for more than a decade.”

The lawsuit alleges that the business and its DBAs engaged in deceptive practices, violating consumer protection laws.
