8-year-old girl killed after being hit by car after getting off school bus in southwest Houston

Tragic news comes from southwest Houston, where a child has been hit by a driver and killed.

The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on Concourse Drive near Beltway 8. Houston police are actively investigating the scene.

KPRC 2′s Bryce Newberry was live at the location. He described a somber and active scene with a child’s backpack still visible in the middle of the road.

The eightIndependent School District-year-old girl was on her commute home from school when the accident occurred.

According to Houston Police Department Lt. Va’Shawnda McLean, the student had been dropped off by an Alief Independent School District bus. She reportedly “darted out into the road” shortly after being dropped off, and the driver did not have time to stop before hitting her.

The driver of the black SUV involved in the accident remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. They reportedly did not show signs of impairment or intoxication and were not traveling at an excessive speed.

Our Sky2 Chopper captured a large area that was taped off, with many residents from nearby apartment complexes gathered, including families and children who witnessed the aftermath.

The victim was transported to the hospital but sadly did not survive. Authorities are reaching out to Alief Independent School District, which serves the area, for further information.

This is a developing story.
