Lester Holt, who has been the anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News” for the past decade, announced on Monday his decision to step down from the broadcast at the start of summer.
Holt will maintain his presence at NBC with a full-time role at “Dateline,” where he has been the principal anchor for nearly 15 years, as per a memo shared with network staff on Monday. NBC News has not yet announced Holt’s successor for “Nightly News.”

“[Holt has] earned deep respect and reverence from our newsroom, industry colleagues and, most importantly, viewers. What’s equally remarkable is how Lester has masterfully filled this esteemed role with extraordinary grace and humility. He’s proven time and time again why he stands among the great legends of broadcast news,” a portion of a statement released by NBC News read.
Holt took on the role of anchor for “Nightly News” in June 2015, after leading the weekend editions for eight years and co-anchoring “Weekend TODAY” for 12 years. He has been the principal anchor of “Dateline” since Sept. 2011.
“A smile comes to my face when I think that with Nightly News, and Dateline, I have now anchored two of the most successful and iconic television news programs in broadcast history,” a portion of a note written by Holt to staffers read.
