Mardi Gras in Galveston: What to expect for safety

Mardi Gras is in full swing in Galveston, drawing big crowds to the island. Law enforcement is stepping up to keep everyone safe.

Vendors and attendees have noticed more security, with barriers set up and roads closed.

Ryan Diolazo, an attendee, said, “I think it’s gonna be smooth because some of the roads are closed and there’s a lot of dispatch officers.” Jessica Dean added, “I love that they’re there and I just want ultimate safety for all the people to enjoy the festivities.”

Galveston is taking extra precautions after recent events in New Orleans. Local police and fire departments have comprehensive plans for emergencies, using concrete and water barriers to block unauthorized access. Vendor Sabrina Packer mentioned, “We’ve always been really safe down here, that’s for sure, but the security is always here.”

Chief Doug Balli highlighted the need for community vigilance, saying, “You will see an increased law-enforcement presence outside, however, law enforcement can’t be everywhere so the real eyes and ears that we need are from the residents and visitors, so please if you see something, say something.”
