CYPRESS, Texas – An entire apartment building is left unlivable following an early morning fire in Cypress.

The flames tore through a building in The 910 Apartments just after 2 a.m., according to neighbors who looked outside to see the fire.

The flames, smoke, and water used to put out the fire impacted 37 units. According to the fire marshall, at least seven units were actually on fire.

A neighboring building is without power as a result.

“My building is fine. It’s still livable. But, I can only imagine the people over there that don’t have anywhere to live have to start over with nothing,” said Christi Capen. “At least they have their lives. That’s the most you could ask for, to have your life at the end of the night.”

“No power, no heating water. I got to go to my friend’s house to take a shower, do anything,” said Jayce Alexander.

According to the Harris County Fire Marshall, Tyricen Hawthorne, 25, admitted to starting the fire.

Neighbors tell KPRC 2’s Gage Goulding that he lit the fire after a fight with his parents.

“I don’t know why people do things like that,” Capen said. “I don’t understand.”

One person was hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.

Investigators say there were several vacant units in the building that burned.

Authorities say the fire caused at least eight families to be displaced, and the American Red Cross was called in to help.
