‘This situation was very unfortunate:’ Family of boy who assaulted 12-year-old girl speaks out

HUNTSVILLE – An altercation at Mance Park Middle School left a 12-year-old girl hospitalized with a severe concussion, sparking concern from her mother.

The incident, which occurred on Valentine’s Day morning at Huntsville ISD and was captured on video shared with our CLICK 2 HOUSTON help desk, shows a male classmate assaulting the girl.

Context of the Incident - ‘Nobody was listening to her’: Mom feels that Huntsville ISD downplayed daughter’s assault

After speaking with the girl’s mother, KPRC 2 has now heard from a family member of the boy, who believes the school handled the situation appropriately.

While the families may have different perspectives on the fight, both are navigating Huntsville ISD’s response.

A family member of the boy involved told KPRC 2 Content Gatherer Zorrie Jones that they understood the seriousness of the situation but believed the school followed proper procedures.

“Because of both parties being involved…the disciplinary action… is what should be done,” they said.

Although they are satisfied with how the school managed their relative’s involvement, they acknowledge the difficulty of the situation for everyone.

“This situation was very unfortunate…for the kids, the school, the parents, for everybody. [should be seen] as a learning lesson,” the family member added.

The family member also reflected on the importance of understanding all perspectives.

“Both kids are not angels. But it comes to where, as parents, we have to understand that our child… is not an angel. So we have to look at both sides.”

The girl’s mother has expressed frustration with a lack of communication from Huntsville ISD, stating they were initially told there was no serious incident.

In contrast, the boy’s family felt informed about the disciplinary actions taken. “It was generally just the fact that, you know, this is what happened.

“This is what we did. And this is where [it] happened,” they explained, expressing satisfaction with the school’s response.

A specific measure was mentioned to prevent future incidents: “They will not be in the same class together for a long time… it will be marked that they will not be in the same class together.”

They recognize the heightened emotions surrounding the situation and emphasize the need for schools to communicate transparently with all families involved.

While details of the disciplinary actions remain confidential, the boy’s family trusts the school made the right decision.

“Nobody got seriously hurt, and the kids were safe,” they said.

They believe the school’s handling of the situation aligns with its student code of conduct, hoping all students learn from the incident.

“His dad has been saying that he is going to be more willing. He’s going to be going up to the school a lot more just to check up, send emails more often to the teachers just to see how the days go and how class is going,” the family member shared.

When KPRC 2 reached out to Huntsville ISD, the district provided the following statement:

“Thorough investigation by Campus Administration and School Resource Officers, appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken in accordance with the district’s Student Code of Conduct. The safety and well-being of our students remain our top priority. Huntsville ISD is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment.”

The boy’s family stands by the school’s response, believing proper measures were taken.

Although both families had different experiences with the school’s communication, they agree that incidents like this highlight the importance of safety and accountability.

The boy’s family hopes all students involved can move forward and view this as a learning moment for the entire community.

“It could have happened anywhere, at any time. It could have happened at a middle school, a high school, even an elementary [school]. Kids are unpredictable in situations,” they said.

As discussions around school safety continue, Huntsville ISD faces growing calls for transparency and consistency in handling student conflicts.
