The Houston Texans are exploring options to improve the stadium they call home, and several different possibilities have been discussed—including building a new stadium altogether.
According to a report from the Houston Chronicle, the Texans have “explored the possibility” of building a new stadium just 23 years after taking their first snap at NRG Stadium.

The Texans are currently in negotiations for a new lease at NRG, which is owned by Harris County. A recent assessment gave the venue an “average or below average” score when stacked up with other NFL stadiums.
With a clear need for improvement, there seems to be two pathways for Harris County and the Texans: renovate or rebuild. It seems likely that the costs of each of these solutions will be examined in the coming weeks.
Along with hosting every Texans’ home game since 2002, NRG has been the home of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo since 2003.

For Houstonians, this probably feels like serious Déjà vu. In the 1990s, the city had to say goodbye to its first franchise, the Houston Oilers, after failing to agree on a new home for the team after the Astrodome became outdated.
With the Astrodome still standing in NRG’s shadow, the possibility of another abandoned spectacle looms over the city—or worse, another NFL team packing its bags.
