OUR FIRST REPORT: Stepdad, stepson charged in botched murder-for-hire shooting
Court records show that the state has filed a motion asking to inspect and photograph Obando’s tattoos. They believe he is affiliated with the Raza Unida criminal street gang.
According to the FBI’s website, Raza Unida is commonly known as a prison gang that typically traffics cocaine and methamphetamine. According to Obando’s criminal history, he has served time in prison on federal drug trafficking charges in the past.
Obando was arrested last week with his stepson. Investigators said they monitored a 40-year-old man’s movements for several days before carrying out the shooting off State Highway 99.
Investigators said the man was shot while driving his work truck. He managed to pull over and call 911. He was life-flighted to the hospital but survived his injuries.
Records show, someone paid Obando to plan and execute the shooting. Obando then paid Rosas $300 to drive the vehicle. Surveillance video helped linked detectives to their car and they were ultimately taken into custody.
Investigators said Rosas confessed to investigators details about the crime. Rosas was also charged with possession after detectives said cocaine was found in his pocket. At this time, its unclear what the motive was or Rosas and Obando’s connection to the man they are accused of trying to kill.
The state also filed a motion to keep Rosas and Obando separated while in jail. Rosas is being held on a $1 million bond for the attempted capital murder charge. Obando has a $750,000 bond for his attempted capital murder charge.
