HOUSTON – An affordable housing project in Houston’s Independence Heights neighborhood is back on after being temporarily paused.

The project had been on hold after the Houston Housing Authority (HHA) proposed terminating its memorandum of understanding with Columbia Independence Heights LLC, the developer behind the Independence Heights II project, and seeking a new developer. This proposal was temporarily tabled during a recent board meeting.

Council Member for Houston’s District H, Mario Castillo, announced Tuesday that the Houston Housing Authority (HHA) has voted down the agenda item to terminate the memorandum of understanding. Thus, the project will move forward as planned.

“This is a win for the community,” said Castillo. “Today, the voices of the residents of Independence Heights were heard loud and clear. Thanks to their advocacy and the support of other local leaders, we have secured the future of this important affordable housing development. It’s a huge step forward for Independence Heights.”

In addition to Council Member Castillo, Congressman Sylvester Turner, State Senator Molly Cook, and other leaders added their voices to the push to ensure the project’s continued progress. The collective support from these leaders and the community ultimately led to Tuesday’s announcement.

“I want to thank my fellow council colleagues, for their commitment and support throughout this process,” Castillo said. “We stood together, demanding answers from the Housing Authority ensuring the project moves forward. This victory is a testament to what can happen when elected officials and the community work hand-in-hand to solve real problems.”

The Independence Heights II development will provide 260 affordable housing units. The development has been in the works for several years.

“This is about more than just housing. It’s about giving residents the opportunity to stay in their community amidst the challenges of rising rents and gentrification,” said Castillo. “I am proud to have been part of this effort, and I look forward to seeing this project bring stability and opportunity to the people of Independence Heights.”
