Mayor Whitmire calls for Houstonians to ‘use common sense,’ protect ‘most vulnerable’ ahead of cold front

‘We do not believe it will be a serious freezing episode’

Houston Mayor John Whitmire held a press conference as Texas prepares for more cold weather this week.

Mayor Whitmire announced that the city is not anticipating much precipitation after Tuesday night, which will keep the event from turning into a snowstorm even if temperatures drop below freezing.

“We do not believe this will be a serious freezing episode,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of using “common sense” and taking precautions to protect the most vulnerable members of our community, including children, pets, the elderly and the homeless.

Starting Wednesday night at 8 p.m., the city will be opening all 12 of its multiservice warming centers:

  • Acres Homes Multi-Service Center: 6719 W. Montgomery Road
  • Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center: 6402 Market Street
  • Fifth Ward Multi-Service Center: 4014 Market Street
  • Fonde Community Center: 110 Sabine Street
  • Kashmere Multi-Service Center: 4802 Lockwood Drive
  • Magnolia Multi-Service Center: 7037 Capitol Street
  • Metropolitan Multi-Service Center: 1475 W. Gray Street
  • Moody Community Center: 3725 Fulton Street
  • Northeast Multi-Service Center: 9720 Spaulding Street
  • Southwest Multi-Service Center: 6400 High Star Drive
  • Sunnyside Multi-Service Center: 4410 Reed Road
  • Third Ward Multi-Service Center: 3611 Ennis Street

The centers will remain open until Friday morning at 8 a.m.

Two of the warming centers will also be catering their efforts to specific members of the community. The Fonde Community Center will be prioritizing mental health, and the Northeast Multi-Service Center will be prioritizing families.

Mayor Whitmire was joined by officials from the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management, the Houston Police Department, the Houston Fire Department, and other public safety entities.
