Researchers at WalletHub compared all 50 states while looking at dozens of factors related to education, including attainment, school quality, and achievement gaps between genders and races.
Texas ranked 10th least educated between Indiana and New Mexico. Researchers also ranked Texans in the 49th percentile for having high school diplomas, 36th with an associate’s degree or having some college experience, 27th for having a bachelor’s, and 30th percentile for a master’s or higher.

Massachusetts, meanwhile, ranked the most educated state in America, while West Virginia was named the least.
“There’s a strong correlation between being more educated and receiving higher compensation,” Chip Lupo, WalletHub Analyst said in a statement. “The most educated states provide high-quality educational experiences from elementary school all the way to graduate programs, which helps parents raise children in an environment that gives them as many opportunities as possible. The top states also provide equitable schooling conditions, with low racial and gender gaps in educational attainment.”
