‘There was no empathy:’ Bathroom incident at Houston-area middle school prompts mom to pull daughter out of school

A Houston mother is speaking out after her daughter was prevented from using the restroom at school, leading to an accident that left her beyond humiliated.

Frustrated by how the school handled the situation—and their lack of empathy and communication—she decided to withdraw her child entirely.

What Happened?

The mother says her daughter attempted to use the restroom during a class transition, but a teacher physically blocked the entrance by putting their arm across the doorway. Unable to hold it any longer, the student had an accident while trying to get to class.

Upset and in tears, she went to the nurse’s office. But instead of receiving clean clothes or having her parent contacted, she was sent back to class in the same wet pants.

“I didn’t even find out until my daughter called me herself,” the mother said. “The school never reached out.”

A Bigger Issue

The day before, her daughter had been dealing with severe stomach pain. The school nurse had called the mother to pick her up early, and later that day, she was taken to the emergency room for tests and pain medication. She was cleared to return to school the next day, though the results were still pending.

When the mother learned what had happened at school, she immediately ordered dry clothes through Instacart, which arrived before she could get there herself.

“She was already in pain, and then this happens? I couldn’t believe it,” she said.

Lack of Empathy

A few days later, a teacher reached out—not to apologize, but to mention that her daughter had refused to participate in class. Even after she said she was having a bad day and needed space, the teacher continued pressing her to complete her work.

Feeling overwhelmed, the child left for the nurse’s office again, in tears.

Instead of acknowledging what she had been through, the teacher simply gave her daughter lunch detention- which only made her more frustrated.

“There was no empathy,” the mother said.

Taking Action

It wasn’t until several days later that the mother finally met with the principal, nurse, and dean—when she formally withdrew her daughter from the school.

The school admitted they should have handled the situation differently and said they would remind staff to allow students to use the restroom when needed. But for this mother, it was too little, too late.

“This is a cultural issue in the school,” she said. “My daughter is embarrassed, anxious, and doesn’t trust teachers anymore.”

Now, she’s looking for an attorney to take on the school, believing this isn’t just about one incident—but a bigger problem that needs to be addressed.

“I want something done ASAP,” she said. “No child should have to go through this.”
