CLEAR CREEK, Texas – We all have our guilty pleasures and if yours is dark humor, then you’re in for a treat! The ‘80s cult classic film Heathers is coming to the stage in the Houston area for one weekend only.
Clear Creek Community Theatre, which also is celebrating 60 years of entertaining Houston area residents with quality shows, is bringing Heathers: The Musical starting Thursday through February 2, 2025, at the Bayou Theatre at the University of Houston Clear Lake.

For those who haven’t seen Heathers in a while and may not remember it too well, it’s about a misunderstood teen yearning for a life beyond the popular kids a.k.a. “Heathers.” After meeting a mysterious new student, J.D., Veronica’s life takes a deadly turn. Olivia Janney plays the role of Veronica and Cristian Romo takes on the brooding J.D.
“It’s a very good story. I mean, I love the characters. They’re so complex,” Janney tells me via Zoom. “You have Veronica, who just sees the best in everyone and just doesn’t give up easily on people. And it shows a little bit of a real-life like comparison, I guess of how toxic relationships can be when someone is like that.”
“I feel the exact same way in terms of like the uniqueness of the story and the complexity of the characters like mine in particular,” Romo added. “I have such a fascinating character to dive deep into and how essentially your trauma can build you up into whatever you end up becoming and how important positive influences can be in your life, especially if that goes unchecked.”
Though the musical plans to pay homage to the original source, Heathers: The Musical looks to take a fresh, boundary-pushing take, that might be not for the faint of heart.
“It takes place in 1989,” Janney explained. “So it was a time where things were things were different and so there are some slurs, some homophobia, some body shaming and then additionally there’s murder, there’s suicide, discussions of suicide, and then there’s some sexual content as well.”
Regardless, both cast members I spoke with were excited to bring this to the Houston area and hope residents will come out to one of their five shows. See below for dates and show times:
