TRINITY COUNTY – A shocking case of animal cruelty has been brought to justice after a man was caught on video dumping a cat that had been sealed inside a box.

Trinity County deputies wasted no time tracking down and arresting the suspect while reinforcing that abandoning animals is not only inhumane but also illegal.

Suspect identified and arrested

Authorities were able to track down the suspect based on surveillance footage from a gas station, where a witness reported seeing the incident.

According to Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace, investigators used a partial license plate and vehicle description to identify the suspect.

“We were able to match up that plate in that vehicle with the guy that actually dumped the cat,” Wallace said.

When confronted, the suspect admitted to abandoning the cat, claiming they had been trying to rehome it for a long time but didn’t know any other way to get rid of it.

Rescue and adoption

The cat was discovered shortly after being dumped and was found in good health, despite being sealed inside the box.

“The problem is it was taped inside of a box that couldn’t [get] out,” Wallace said.

Instead of being sent to a shelter, the cat found a permanent home—thanks to the woman who discovered it.

“The lady that found [the cat]... ended up adopting it herself,” Wallace said.

Growing animal dumping problem

Wallace highlighted that animal abandonment is a widespread issue in the county, largely due to overpopulation and lack of responsible pet ownership.

“It’s a huge problem everywhere. The shelters are full. No one has anywhere to take these dogs,” the sheriff said. “People are not adopting these dogs or cats out. So animal dumping has become a huge problem. It’s an expensive problem, and it’s a cruel problem.”

Many abandoned pets face starvation or become prey to wildlife, making this a serious concern beyond just legal repercussions.

Legal consequences for animal cruelty

Wallace is making it clear that there will be consequences for those who abandon their pets.

“If we get you, we’re going to prosecute you. You’re going to get arrested, get prosecuted as a Class A misdemeanor, and hefty fines with it. It could carry some jail time,” Wallace warned.

He also urged residents to think carefully before adopting pets and ensure they are ready for the responsibility.

“Everybody gets… kittens or they get this cute little puppy and it grows up and then it becomes a nuisance… If you get an animal, make sure you have the money to get it spayed or neutered, feed it properly, and vaccinate it,” Wallace said.

Community efforts and solutions

To address the problem, Trinity County has secured a grant to fund an animal control officer. Additionally, local volunteers are stepping in to help build a shelter and increase pet adoption efforts.

“We’ve actually got a group of people that want to form a [nonprofit] where they’re going to take donations, help build a shelter, help get these animals spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and adopted out,” Wallace said.

Wallace also stressed the importance of spaying and neutering pets as a long-term solution to preventing overpopulation and unnecessary suffering.

How to report animal abandonment

Authorities encourage the public to report animal cruelty immediately if they witness it.

“If you see somebody dumping an animal… call us immediately. If you can get video, that’s even better. The license plate is the most important thing,” Wallace advised.

Taking quick action can help law enforcement hold offenders accountable and protect vulnerable animals.
