Houston police are investigating a disturbing case of animal cruelty after a stray Husky mix dog was shot on January 17 in northwest Houston.

Officers responded to a call near 3500 E. TC Jester about the 3-year-old wounded dog and spoke with a witness who heard the shots ring out.

The witness described seeing a man in a white truck who admitted to shooting the dog. Despite this confession, no arrests have been made, and police are still piecing together exactly what happened.

KPRC2 Reporter Corley Peel spoke with the witness, who asked to remain anonymous, about her conversation with the shooter.

“He said that he was afraid the dog was going to attack his dog, which was secured behind his fence. So, it would have been impossible for the dog to attack his dog,” said the witness.

Another woman who shared videos after rushing to try and help the dog said she is hoping police will make an arrest.

“I want to see him get charged. You can’t just shoot an animal, an innocent being, and then do it in a neighborhood that is family-friendly. You can’t just do that," said Diana McAllister.

The dog is now with SPCA who said she is in stable condition. They said the dog appeared alert but is taking her recovery day by day. It’s unclear when the dog will be up for adoption, but SPCA will post on its website when she is available.

The case is now being handled by HPD’s Animal Cruelty Division. It’s not clear whether or not charges will be filed. HPD is asking those with information to contact Animalcrueltyunit@Houstonpolice.org or call 713-884-3131.
