A family in northwest Houston was left puzzled after a stranger left a box of puppies on their front porch in a seemingly random act.
Late in the afternoon on Jan. 27, Valeria Ramirez returned to her home near Rosslyn Road after a normal day of work and a trip to the grocery store, when she noticed a box with a brick on top of it sitting on her front porch. She heard a noise coming from the box that she described as “whining.”

“At first, I only saw three puppies,” she told KPRC 2′s Michael Horton. “Once I took the brick off, that’s when there was [three more puppies] hiding underneath the flaps of the box. So, there were six puppies in total.”
Understandably confused, Ramirez took the box to her garage and gave the puppies a bite to eat and some space to roam.
”They were crying a lot, and obviously they were hungry,” Ramirez explained.
When Ramirez’s mother, Laura, returned home, the family began to investigate how the puppies ended up in a box on their porch.
It didn’t take long to figure out where they came from. Footage from a neighbor’s security camera from earlier in the day on Jan. 27 showed a brown SUV parking on the street. A man got out of the vehicle carrying the box, left it on the porch, and hurried away.

Their family has no idea who the man in the footage is and doesn’t know of anyone who has puppies. Laura used to help out with animal rescues, but it had been two years since she was involved. Outside of a possible connection there, it seems completely random.
“[My mother] was very much so shocked. She was a little bit upset that somebody would just do that, just drop off puppies at somebody’s house like that. I think that would be anybody’s reaction, to be honest. And that was mine. It was very concerning. But nonetheless, her reaction was, ‘Okay, what can we do to help out these puppies?’”
The family’s quest to find homes for the puppies is underway. Laura contacted the police about the situation, and she said that one of the officers is interested in adopting one of the puppies. Two of Laura’s friends are also willing to shelter some of the puppies for a little while.
It’s a good start, but the Ramirezes are hoping to find a loving home for each of these puppies. It’s a task they didn’t ask for, but one they’re ready to take on.
“I just hope that we are able to find them good homes,” Valeria said. “I don’t know what else to say about it. The person who did it, I mean, it kind of sucks that they had to do that, you know? That they could have just gone to a shelter themselves instead of just dropping it off in somebody’s house.”
