How KPRC 2 plans to handle President Trump’s executive order renaming Gulf of Mexico, Denali

On his first day in office, President Donald Trump issued an executive order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

The Associated Press, which provides professional writing guidelines to news outlets around the world, will refer to the Gulf of Mexico by its original name, which it has carried for 400 years while acknowledging the name Gulf of America.

While Associated Press style guidelines are not changing related to the Gulf of Mexico, guidelines are changing due to President’s Trump order restoring the name of North America’s highest point back to Mount McKinley. Mount McKinley was renamed ‘Denali’ by President Barack Obama in 2015.

KPRC 2, like many other news outlets, will abide by the journalistic standards set by the Associated Press Stylebook.

“The Associated Press Stylebook has long been the standard for newspapers, digital news, and broadcast news operations for sources for establishing guidelines for names, grammar, spelling, and punctuation,” says Sean McLaughlin, Graham Media Group’s VP of News. “Graham Media Group has long used this reference as a guide for consistency in all of our media hubs. There is no compelling reason to deviate from their guidance on these two matters.”

Associated Press Stylebook recommendations are not static and do change as the years pass. KPRC 2 will revisit this subject once AP Style guidelines are updated on this subject.
