HOUSTON – Houston police have identified a man on the run accused of shooting two people in Fourth Ward during an argument about an Xbox, killing one of them.

It happened around 1 p.m. last Thursday, when investigators said Corey Dontaye James, 21, and an unidentified man, 21, got into an argument about a gaming console.

A neighbor’s surveillance camera captured the fight, in which someone seems to say, “Why you took that man’s f****** game?” before another voice can be heard seeming to say, “They both going to jail, how about that?”

Eventually, the argument between the two young men became physical, and other people jumped in to try and break them up. That’s when police said James took out a gun and shot the unidentified 21-year-old as well as one of the women, 56, who tried to stop the fight.

Both of them were taken to a hospital, where the 21-year-old died, while the woman was expected to survive.

Police at the scene told KPRC 2 that James arrived in a Hyundai, and at least two people were inside the vehicle, including the driver and shooter. A shared news release from HPD does not specify the driver, however.

James remains at large, but the Harris County District Attorney’s Office has accepted murder charges as well as aggravated assault. Houston police also shared James’ previous mugshot dated February 2024.

If you have any information on James’ whereabouts or details on the case, you’re urged to call the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or speak anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
