Vargas was killed on Wednesday after investigators said he and members of the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force tried to arrest a wanted man in southwest Houston.

Sheriff Bo Stallman says the department is mourning, but remembers the type of deputy and man Vargas was.

Additionally, the department has received a tremendous amount of support from across the country after losing the described dedicated officer and family man.

“We’ve had people reach out to us from everywhere trying to send their condolences and offer any kind of assistance or resources that they can,” he said. “He has a loving family, he was a big family man, had three beautiful daughters and a loving and supporting wife as well so he leaves those behind and we are going to do everything we can to support the family through this process, they are our family and he’s certainly our brother as well.”
