ANGLETON, Texas – The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office is remembering their coworker and partner, Deputy Jesus Vargas.
Vargas was killed on Wednesday after he was shot by a suspect he was attempting to serve a warrant to in Houston.
Sheriff Bo Stallman says the department is grieving, but remembering the type of deputy and man Vargas was.
“There’s grieving, there’s certainly a hole left in the department after yesterday and we are doing the best we can,” Stallman said.
Stallman said they have received an outpouring of support from across the country after the loss of Vargas.
“We’ve had people reach out to us from everywhere trying to send their condolences and offer any kind of assistance or resources that they can,” he said.
Stallman described the type of man Vargas was, praising his character and pledging to support his family in any way they can.
“He has a loving family, he was a big family man, had three beautiful daughters and a loving and supporting wife as well so he leaves those behind and we are going to do everything we can to support the family through this process, they are our family and he’s certainly our brother as well,” Stallman said.
For Vargas, the type of work he was doing when he died was routine, according to Stallman. Vargas was a member of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force on behalf of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office. Stallman says Vargas was with his partner at the time of the shooting.
“This was nothing out of the norm for them, they did this on a regular basis and it was a common event for them to partake in,” Stallman said. “My heart goes out to his partner as well as the family and our entire sheriff’s office family.”
Stallman asks the community to remember the Vargas family as well as their office in this time of mourning.
“I just want to ask that everyone keep the Vargas family in their thoughts and their prayers as well as the law enforcement community as we mourn through this tragic loss, unnecessary tragic loss,” he said.
