Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies and other first responders rushed to the scene after hearing that live power lines were down as a result of the crash.

Authorities located the vehicle that struck an electric pole. The collision caused the transformers from the pole fell onto the car and started a fire. The two occupants, a man and a woman, were trapped inside the burning car.

Firefighters had to wait for the electricity from the power lines to be cut off before they could begin spraying water on the vehicle.

The male driver was pronounced dead in the vehicle. The female passenger was taken to a nearby hospital with burns on roughly 70% of her body.

It’s currently unknown whether or not excessive speed or alcohol played a role in this crash. Although it was not raining at the time of the wreck, the roads were still slippery from thunderstorms earlier in the night.

The investigation into the wreck is ongoing.
