Houston-area grandmother who takes care of disabled husband receives $1,500 ‘Christmas Miracle’

HOUSTON – It’s ‘Christmas Miracles’ week at KPRC. For nine years, Bill Spencer and the Spencer Solves It team have specialized in fulfilling the Christmas dreams of local children in need. Bill and his team are transforming Christmas for five families who couldn’t afford to give their children anything this year.

Joy Morris begins her day as she always does, by helping others.

Her husband, Henry, is completely disabled after suffering a massive stroke and a near-fatal brain aneurysm. Since, Joy has become his full-time caregiver, sacrificing her career to support him through his recovery.

“I wouldn’t be here without her. She’s there for me every day,” Henry said.

But Joy’s generosity extends beyond her husband. When two of her daughters faced homelessness, Joy opened her home to them and their children, welcoming five grandchildren ages 5 to 15: Daniel, Brooklyn, Chloe, Hannah, and Irenea.

“I know what it’s like not to have anyone to turn to,” Joy said. “I just wanted to help them until they get back on their feet.”

Despite caring for an extended family of eight, Joy is also pursuing her education to become a “recovery coach” for those struggling with substance abuse, a challenge she has overcome herself.

“I want to help others and let them know there’s hope,” she says.

With all that Joy has given, she finds herself with nothing left to provide for her grandchildren for Christmas.

“We’re super broke,” she said. “We have enough to pay the bills, but nothing extra for Christmas.”

The Spencer Solves It team, in collaboration with Academy Sports and Outdoors and Laura Alexis, CEO of Innovative Lasers of Houston rescued Chris Joy and her family.

Laura Alexis presented Joy with a $1,500 donation.

“Thank you so much,” Joy said.

But the surprises don’t end there. The children receive brand-new bicycles.

“Yeah, this is the best,” said the youngest.

To top it all off, the family was also gifted a $1,000 gift card from Academy Sports and Outdoors, adding an extra layer of joy to their Christmas celebration.

“Did we give you a Merry Christmas?” Bill Spencer asks. Joy, embracing the moment, replies, “Yes, thank you so much.”

This Christmas, Joy Morris and her family have been blessed with the true spirit of giving, thanks to the kindness of strangers who turned their holiday season into a memorable celebration.
