“The excitement continues to build as we enter the final days of 2024 with another chance for Texas Lottery players to break the record for the largest jackpot prize ever won in our state,” said Ryan Mindell, executive director of the Texas Lottery. “Players are dreaming big, and every ticket purchased in Texas helps support public education. You can’t win if you don’t play, but remember – it only takes one ticket to win!”
Friday’s drawing will be the 29 in the current Mega Millions jackpot run, which began at an estimated annuitized $20 million on Sept. 13. This run started after a jackpot-winning ticket worth an estimated annuitized $810 million was sold in Sugar Land for the Sept. 10 drawing.
This is the game’s largest jackpot up for grabs since the March 26, 2024 drawing when an estimated annuitized $1.128 billion jackpot was won in New Jersey.
According to Mega Millions, 13 Mega Millions jackpots have been won during December since the game began in 2002. Three were won in the days after Christmas, while the other 10 were won before Christmas.
Texas has had 15 Mega Millions jackpot prize winners since it joined the game in 2003, including the game’s most recent one in the Sept. 10, 2024 drawing. For that jackpot win, The Sol Living Trust, of Sugar Land, chose the cash value option for the estimated annuitized $810 million jackpot prize and received $409,297,624 before taxes – the largest prize ever paid out to a single Texas Lottery player.
