HOUSTON – Houston Police are looking for up to five suspects who tried to rob an armored vehicle driver at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon as he serviced an ATM in Sunnyside.
Houston Police Department received a call reporting a robbery at around 3:30 p.m. at 9451 Cullen Blvd. The FBI’s Bank Robbery Task Force also responded to the scene.
Police said four or five men, all armed with guns, got out of a white Chevrolet Impala and attempted to steal money from the employee but it’s unclear if they got away with any.
The attempted robbery turned into a shootout, police said, which was captured on surveillance video by a nearby business.
An employee nearby said he heard five or six shots and that the men wore masks.
After the exchange of gunfire, the robbers fled the scene.
Police said at least one of the men drove away in the Impala, and the rest of the group scattered on foot to a next-door strip mall parking lot where they carjacked a woman and took off.
A coworker of the woman who was carjacked told KPRC 2’s Bryce Newberry that the woman was a 26 or 27-year-old employee in the area who was on a lunch break at the time of the attack. She said the men pointed a gun at her and pulled her out of her car using force, shoving her to the ground. The coworker added that the victim was not injured, but she was shaken up after the assault.
Officers began searching the area and were soon able to find both of the involved vehicles at a dead-end street.
All of the suspects remain at large.
Earlier this month, Sugar Land police responded to an armored truck robbery outside an HEB, and while police wouldn’t say if those suspects have been arrested, a spokesperson for SLPD told KPRC 2 the Cullen Boulevard incident isn’t believed to be connected to the Sugar Land case.
