Comedian and Alief’s own Mo Amer, along with Netflix, shared photos teasing fans with what to expect in the highly anticipated second series on social media.
The semi-autobiographical series first debuted on Netflix in August 2022 and was raved by critics and viewers like myself. At its core, Mo is about a man soul-searching, which is self-evident for anyone who followed the 41-year-old’s stand-up comedy. However, it was filmed in Houston, so it’s safe to say the show is a love letter to Houston.
Like Amer, his character “Mo Najjar” is ethnically Palestinian, but was born in Kuwait and raised in Houston. He also happens to speak fluent Spanish and be Muslim.

By using Houston as the series’ backdrop, Amer highlights the complexity of religion and culture in and of themselves, where subtle nuances are meant to create division. Amer instead chose to culminate them and give everyone a piece of something they all might enjoy; whether that’s laughter from a joke, nostalgia from the background music, a specific cultural reference, or a heartfelt tear.
Back in July 2023, during a short interview, Amer was unable to tell me much about when season 2 would return due to the Writer’s Strike. During that time, he was recognized by Houston City Hall with Mayor Sylvester Turner proclaiming September 16 “Mo Amer Day.”
He was also gifted a belt buckle from the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, where Amer revealed that was where he was first exposed to stand-up comedy at 10 years old.
“At that moment, I knew, for some reason, just in my gut, that’s what I was supposed to be doing for the rest of my life,” Amer said at a podium before a crowd at City Hall. “Four years later, I started doing stand-up comedy in high school at Hastings.”
After a cliffhanger ending to the first season, fans remain at the edge of their seats wondering what will happen next. One thing’s for certain, Amer has been putting in the work literally and figuratively, so maybe we can let him cook a little longer.
Mo will return to Netflix for its Season 2 premier on January 30, 2025.
