HOUSTON – It’s pretty incredible being home to some of the top-ranked basketball players in the country. But do you ever wonder what the ultra-competitive landscape of Houston high school basketball looks like?
KPRC 2’s Sofia Ojeda sat down with a small business owner in Houston who recently launched a magazine detailing many of these athletes’ stories and hoping to help parents navigate the changing world of college recruiting and possible NIL deals.
In the basketball world, Brandon Nunn is known for his fast-paced, in-your-face, thrilling highlight reels showcasing the best of the best all across the state of Texas.
“I like to make it entertaining and I think that helps with the whole story of who the player is,” says BillionaireVSNS Magazine owner, Brandon Nunn.
He started shooting athletes training in college almost ten years ago.
“Of course, the really good players are getting filmed by Ball is Life and all the really big companies but a regular player wasn’t getting coverage and we ended up making it a service,” says Nunn.
He likes to call himself a pioneer in helping to make this a service for players, parents, and coaches.
“It became story-telling in basketball. An athlete’s story is super important to who they are in life,” adds Nunn.
Texas is home to some of the best athletes in the country. Nunn believes Houston and Dallas have become the center of the basketball world closely competing with New York and California.
Players like Aaliyah Chavez, the Neumann brothers, and the Carlton sisters, are changing the game.
“You see a whole line of kids after the game asking for autographs. High school basketball is just different nowadays. Players are like celebrities,” added Nunn.
Parents today are also faced with a lot of decisions and choices when it comes to college recruiting and possible NIL, or name image and likeness deals.
“The NIL space changed the game a lot so kids aren’t just looking at a school and thinking okay I think this is a good fit as far as playing goes. Now it’s become business. They’re looking at it from that perspective, but also a financial perspective, a brand perspective,” says Nunn.
In his first edition, Billionaire VSNS (pronounced visions) Magazine, Nunn is not only sharing athletes’ stories but is working to inform parents about the latest basketball landscape.
“For parents and audience it’s going to be really informative. They’re going to have an idea of what moves to take as far as the NIL space goes and it may even help with their college decisions. When you’re an athlete especially nowadays, it’s a business. You have to really present yourself as someone that can be marketable,” says Nunn.
Nunn adds, the right positive attitude and good grades all play a huge role in that marketability as well.
