Houston 3rd grader named National Math Star to receive $100K in STEM resources

HOUSTON – Sorry to burst the bubble for any parents rocking a “My Child is an Honor Roll Student” sticker on their cars. An up-and-coming prodigy from Houston was recently named a 2024 National Math Star, where she will get access to student resources and support over the next decade valued at $100,000.

Haripriya Patel, a 3rd grade student at Lone Star Online Academy (LSOA) is one of 61 Texas students selected for the prestigious program, that aims to prepare future mathematicians, scientists, and engineers.

At just 8-years-old, LSOA said Haripriya showed exceptional math skills, scoring above the 99th percentile on the quantitative and nonverbal sections of their Cognitive Abilities Test.

Now, she will be part of a diverse group of students from nearly 30 different Texas school districts between the ages of 6 and 10 -- all recognized for their aptitudes and passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

That entails Haripriya’s accessibility to advanced coursework, mentorship from professional mathematicians, summer camp experiences, family advising, community events, and financial assistance for STEM extracurricular activities.

“Haripriya shines inside and outside the classroom, and we are so proud to have her represent our school at the national level,” said LSOA Executive Director Chaille Hymes. “This program opens the door for Haripriya to receive even more resources to complement her existing robust education. We look forward to supporting both her and her family during this new journey.”
