Nearly 1.5 million people in Harris County voted on Election Day

On Election Day in Harris County, despite heavy rain in the morning and election monitors from the state and the Department of Justice, went quite smoothly, according to Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth.

“We had some challenges mainly due to the weather early on that caused some power outages at some of our voting centers, but our voting machines run on batteries so people kept right on voting,” Hudspeth said.

After a very popular early voting period where 1.2 million voters voted early in person and by mail, some 319,000 registered voters came out on election day in person to vote, bringing the total number of people casting ballots in Harris County to just under 1.5 million.

That’s roughly a 58% voter turnout for this Presidential election, about 10% less than the number of Harris County voters that came out to vote in the 2020 election, but comparisons are hard to make, because in 2020 the nation was engulfed in the COVID pandemic and the early voting period that year was increased by six days, and drive through voting was in play.

Hudspeth credits the hard work of her election workers with pulling off a very smooth election day in Harris County.
